How different do you feel watercolor painting really is from other painting mediums? I have done folk art painting in the past with acrylics on saw blades and wooden objects like foot stools and flower presses. I know the final look is different but seems like most of the techniques are the same. Any thoughts?

It is very different. With Acrylics and Oils, you start Dark to light. With watercolors, are mostly Transparent and the whites are the paper itself. So it starts light to dark. Takes some getting used to. I'd watch lots of Tutorials, before trying and just buying the Basic 6 color set of paints with warm and cool Primaries. Even though Gouache and Casein are also watercolors, but Opaque and very different attributes.

Here is a good comparison for Oil and Acrylics.
