DISCLAIMER: Let me start out by saying that, this, in no way, is intended to be a " Tutorial " or Instruction on How to Do a Painting. It is mearly, my attempt to show you how I went about painting this portrait, using both professional and self taught techniques. So feel free to chime in with any constructive criticism or ideas, you wish. Been wanting to try a portraiture on larger format, so I'll be using 16 x 20 Arches Rough 140# paper and using the stylized picture, from the 2019 Aquavit Label, used for the Hoodsport Hardware Distillery. Used an 8.5 x 11 print of the image and graphed off 1 inch squares. Then, on the 16 x 20 paper, graphed off 2 inch squares to double the size. Square by square, measured out the image and transferred the Viking onto the paper, then erased the square ruling lines and mistakes. Used a kneaded eraser to roll off excess graphite and made corrections. The paper is already stretched, by being in a Block Pad format. Taped the edges, using black Washi Tape. Next will be to figure out which Daniel Smith's colors to use for the background and flesh tones. Thanks for looking.

You've taken on a good project. The graphing method works well for drawing human figures. The tiniest bit can make the body out of proportion and you can't get away with that in doing portraits. Can't wait to see the finished portrait.

Going slow, because of lack of confidence and having a hard time posting photos.

Yes, finally jumped in and started the flesh tones. Thanks for the inspiration, Joe. Mix for flesh tones were Quin. Gold and Perelene Red, with touches of Violet.

It's starting to look like the keg-toting viking I know. Ready to do it again next spring?
